Intro: A tale of two search engines
An Application Programming Interface (API) allows one program to connect and interact with another. When we give our program the ability to search, we often use a search API. There are two main types of search APIs.
- Search Engine Result Pages (SERP) API: Battle tested tools with decades of progress. These tools scrape search pages and feed you their data.
- AI Search API: An AI model reviews search results with contextual understanding. Their comprehension a game changer for SEO and web presence as a whole.
Before you read each of the following subsections, think of the following query, “Why do dogs chew?”
What is An SERP API?
SERP APIs use crawlers to index just about every page on the internet. Each page is given a category and alongside different rankings for different queries. If you really want to get into the weeds, Google has an excellent page here breaking down exactly how their search engine works.
SERP APIs are used in one way or another by:
- Developers
- Data Engineers
- Market Reseachers
- Fact Checkers
- SEO Managers
- Content Writers
This list would go on for days if it was exhaustive. Most importantly, SERP is the backbone to every web presence around. If you don’t rank, you get no exposure. No exposure means no potential customers.
Results are indexed by a crawler. They’re based on keyword matching between the search and the content. If you perform a search for “Why do dogs chew?”, you’ll find results with the most related keywords: Dog, Canine, Paws Toys…
What is an AI search API?
AI Search APIs are radically different. When you ask Gemini to summarize your results, it actually reads and understands the results. When wrapped into an API, this process is still the same. Brave Search API feeds the search results into an LLM. The LLM analyzes the results and generates a response in context to the query.
You’ve likely used AI search too — not in API form, but you’ve probably used it. When bundled as an API service, this gives founders, companies, developers and content creators a way to make their pages smarter.
Think back to our dog search example and look at the following two snippets.
Modern SEO content
The piece below is written for modern SEO. It performs well with AI models because it provides real context as to why dogs chew.
Dogs chew to relieve teething pain, reduce stress and explore their environment. Choosing the right toy depends on their breed and behavior.
Before AI models, this piece actually would’ve been considered bad for SEO. It provides insight, but it lacks keywords.
Legacy SEO content
Think back to our query: “Why do dogs chew?” The snippet below provides zero valuable information about why they chew. However, it contains the following words: chew , dog, canine, expert and top picks. The context is garbage, but it builds authority with primitive algoritms.

chew,dogandcanine: These are related keywords and they hold real weight.expertandtop picks: While not directly related to the query, they signal authority. Legacy SEO really likes authority.
AI search APIs perform a search. Then, they serve the search results through API endpoints. With these tools, you can build a system capable asking, reasoning and retrieving data independently. AI Search APIs don’t just give your program automation in the old school sense. They give it the tools required for agency.
SERP API: The ancestor
When it comes to Search APIs, SERP defined the standard much like homo-erectus defined all of the humans that came after it. Homo-erectus birthed our ability to walk upright, assess surroundings and social structure that still echo in human behavior today. SERP APIs have done much of the same for search.
- The API service scrapes raw search results pages from Google, Bing or another search engine.
- This data is often saved as raw HTML or loose JSON.
- These tools often rely on proxy rotation, JavaScript rendering and other techniques to maintain reliable access for automated workflows.
- Some SERPs allow filtering but many include ads and other irrelevant data.
- Once you’ve got your data, it needs to be processed further to become usable.
How it works
SERP APIs all use the same basic architecture. A crawler sends your query to the search engine through a proxy. The page is then scraped and returned to you — usually with additional processing required. This isn’t efficient, but it’s incredibly stable. SERP APIs served us for decades with relatively no real changes.
- The user sends a query with a keyword or phrase of keywords to the API backend.
- The API server routes a request through a proxy to fetch the results.
- If a search engine detects automated access, it may trigger challenges such as CAPTCHAs — which can complicate integration and require additional handling mechanisms.
- The API parses the HTML and returns the results to your client-side software.
- Your software needs to finish cleaning the data so it can fit your system.
This process is excellent when you’re just amassing raw data. However, the program has no semantic understanding of the content being scraped.
SERP APIs are here to stay
Contrary to what you might think, SERP isn’t going away. A decent SERP API is a great way to collect a ton of data cheaply before feeding it into your system — whether your system uses an LLM or a more traditional setup. Model Context Protocol (MCP) allows AI Agents to control tools like the ones listed below.
- SerpAPI: This tool is built specifically for SERP scraping. In its current state, it’s not optimized for Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) but you can add workarounds for this in your system.
- Bright Data: With Bright Data, you gain enterprise-grade web scraping and SERP APIs. To use it with AI, you need custom structure and ranking.
- ZenRows: ZenRows is more about getting through blocks than collecting aggregate data. ZenRows is excellent for adding a custom search layer to your AI agent.
- Scrapingdog: Scrapingdog offers SERP APIs for both Google and Bing. They don’t offer specific platform for AI Agents yet, but can be configured to work with minimal overhead.
These tools are excellent for building data pipelines and they’re not going anywhere. In the age of AI, they’re missing one crucial piece: Comprehension. AI search API: Evolutionary leap
AI Search API is a leap forward in terms of software evolution. The scale of this leap is almost incomprehensible. These APIs use AI agents to actually understand the search. This isn’t an upgrade, it’s a complete paradigm shift — our tools are now able to think.
- These tools are built specifically for AI Agents and LLMs.
- They deliver structured JSON with ranks and filtering — ready for AI consumption.
- Your query generates a real answer, not just links matching the keyword.
- Filter by domain name and content age using natural language.
- These tools plug directly into RAG systems and AI workflows. You can use them out of the box.
How it works
AI search APIs use the same basic principles as their SERP ancestors — ranking, filtering and relevancy. However, AI takes it to the next level. Your results are based on contextual relevance, not keyword packing. Instead of raw HTML chunks or loosely structured JSON, you get custom structures made by LLMs — for people or other downstream LLMs.

Yesterday’s SERP is the backbone of tomorrow’s AI search
These tools are actually both evolving in a way that will meet in the middle. Legacy SERP API services are becoming more AI friendly and AI Search APIs are ingesting more data than ever.
Neural, vector and semantic search are central to the future. Going forward, software needs to be intelligent. It will perform searches based on context and keyword ranking.
Many tools today already need real-time context. If you’re using an LLM in your workflow, it often needs updates in real-time. Today’s retrieval agents are tomorrow’s search engines. Google, Bing, Brave and other search engines are leaning heavily into AI-powered search. Your Search API won’t just Google your query, it’ll ping an LLM that’s already completed ranking and filtering for you.
Hybrid models are already emerging. These models use a mix of keyword and vector embedded search. Models perform a large SERP-style search for keywords. Then they analyze the results using their vector embeddings. Search engines didn’t force libraries to close. They made libraries evolve for efficiency. AI Search is doing the same. SERP isn’t going away, it’s transforming to fit the new market.
Much of scraping itself has already been redefined. A year ago, almost everyone still manually wrote parsers. In 2025, you get the page and farm the parsing out to an LLM. APIs won’t output JSON objects filled with chunks of raw HTML, they’ll serve content structured to fit right into your system.
